If you’re experiencing hearing loss and considering hearing aids, one question you’re likely to ask is: Does health insurance cover hearing aids? At San Antonio Custom Hearing, we know how important that question is—and how confusing the answer can be. That’s why we work hard to provide clear, accurate guidance and help you maximize your insurance benefits.

Our mission is simple: make high-quality hearing care accessible and affordable, regardless of your insurance provider. We accept a wide range of private health plans and government programs, and we’re experts at helping patients navigate their hearing aid coverage.

Does Health Insurance Cover Hearing Aids

The short answer is: sometimes. Hearing aid coverage varies depending on the company and specific plan you’re enrolled in. Some plans offer generous allowances, while others may offer limited benefits—or none at all. We’ll verify your specific benefits and explain what your plan will pay for before you commit to any treatment.

Hearing Aid Coverage by Insurance Provider

We proudly accept most major insurers and workers’ compensation programs. Each provider has multiple plans with various benefits. Here’s a summary of what some of them offer. (Note: Benefits are subject to change based on the most current plan details.)

  • Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS)

Blue Cross Blue Shield offers hearing benefits on many plans. The coverage varies, for example, the HealthSelect Plan offers a $2000 benefit that is available every 3 years.
  • BCBS Federal Employee Program (BCBS FEP)

Provides a $2,500 benefit. This benefit was available every 3 years, but in 2021, the program changed the benefit renewal to every 5 years.
  • Aetna

Coverage varies depending on the plan. Some plans offer hearing aid allowances.
  • United Healthcare (UHC)

Coverage depends on the plan.  The Choice Plus plan, for example, offers $2,000 every 3 years.
  • Humana

Medicare Advantage plans often include discounts or allowances on hearing aids.
  • Cigna

Coverage depends on the plan. Some plans offer an allowance, while others provide limited or no coverage.
  • Mail Handlers Benefit Plan (MHBP)

Offers a $2,000 benefit for their members every 5 years.
  • Department of Labor Workers’ Compensation (DOL)

If your hearing loss is job-related, DOL may provide full hearing aid coverage with proper documentation.
  • Manhattan Life Insurance

Some plans offer their members up to $1,000 every 3 years.
  • Teacher Retirement System (TRS)

Most TRS plans include a benefit; it’s usually a $500 benefit every 3 years.
  • Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB)

Does Health Insurance Cover Hearing Aids Through Medicare

This is one of the most common questions that we are asked. Unfortunately, the answer is no, Medicare does not cover hearing aids. As helpful as it would be, it’s doubtful they will change their guidelines. Supplemental policies however may offer benefits. Our experienced staff will verify and explain your benefits.
